Andrew Flintoff appointed Sydney Thunder men's head coach

Andrew Flintoff, a former England all-rounder, has been hired as the new coach of Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL).

On Tuesday (June 2), Flintoff's appointment as Trevor Bayliss's replacement was made official. He has previously led Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, leading them to two top-four finishes from the bottom of the table. This will be his first overseas coaching position. Additionally, he served as a consultant to England's white-ball teams under Matt Mott in 2023 and 2024 and coached the England Lions team during their most recent tours.

The 48-year-old has agreed to a two-year contract with the Sydney-based team and is said to have beaten competition from Shane Watson and Dan Christian to take up the role.

"I can't wait to get over there and get started," Flintoff said after the appointment. I see this with a lot of optimism. When you look at the players, the support, and the franchise, I believe there is a significant foundation upon which to build.

According to Flintoff, the combination of exciting young players like Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes, and Tanveer Sangha and experienced players like David Warner, Chris Green, and Daniel Sams will work well.

His predecessor, Bayliss, departed in February after six seasons with the team, a decision that came on the back of Thunder's BBL 2025/26 campaign where they finished last, just like in the edition before that.

Flintoff himself appeared in the BBL briefly, featuring for Brisbane Heat in seven games in 2014/15 at the very end of his career. In 2010, when the Big Bash was an interstate competition, he was slated to join as a player, but an injury prevented him from taking advantage of the opportunity with the Queensland Bulls.

In a press release, Thunder termed it "their most significant off-field acquisition in club history", with General Manager Trent Copeland calling it "a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder".
