Amshi de Silva Stars as Texas Super Kings Win Oakland Opener against San Francisco
As their bowlers, led by medium-pacer Amshi de Silva, defeated San Francisco Unicorns to defend their middling total of 161/8 in the MLC, Texas Super Kings' brief wobble with the bat in the first innings did not come back to haunt them.
Donovan Ferreira (45 off 28) and Faf du Plessis (40 off 24) at the top of the order made a significant impact, but the rest of TSK's batting was largely ineffective. They started out on 96/5, but they limped to 161/8 to give their bowlers a total to work with, and they took over from there with an all-around performance that missed the Unicorns by 22 runs.
TSK received the kind of start they desired. For the first time this season, both of their openers got going at the same time, and Saiteja Mukkamalla added a 72-run stand to get the team past the Powerplay without losing a wicket. While Mukkamalla slowly caught up, Du Plessis scored the majority of the goals in the stand and did so quickly. The team reached 50 with a sixth-wicket six off Matthew Short in the seventh over, and du Plessis appeared ready to bat again. However, Finn Allen's incredible diving catch at long-off in the eighth over ended his carefree batting.
After that, TSK lost Rilee Rossouw, Milind Kumar, and Shubham Ranjane for single-digit scores, and Mukkamalla's essay also slowed down, ending on 36 out of 30. When Ferreira arrived to reassemble the innings, TSK were down to 96/5. He added 40 off 27 with Wiaan Mulder, who scored four runs in this partnership before Brody Couch retired him. However, that partnership was crucial in propelling TSK well past the 100-run mark. In his quick 45, Ferreira hit four sixes and a few fours, falling shortly after leading the team past 150 runs.
SFU had every reason to believe there were two points to be won going into the break, but they lost their way during the Powerplay itself. Amshi led the early destruction, striking out openers Allen and Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Connor Esterhuizen in the fifth over to reduce the chasers' score to 37/3. Short and Sanjay Krishnamurthi tried to stop the slide until shortly after the Powerplay, when Short was run out in the seventh over. Short and Hassan Khan tried to move the bat around, but they both died quickly, and SFU was down six before the halfway point.
Couch put on short stands with Hammad Azam and Peter Siddle to keep the chase going even from that position, but in the end, that was insufficient. SFU needed 58 runs off 36 balls to reach 104/7 in 14 overs, with Couch and Hammad in the middle. Before Hammad hit one into his stumps, Amshi returned to bowl his final over and hit sixes and four leg-byes. Amshi won with a score of 4-28, putting SFU at 115/8. However, Couch was not finished yet. He hit a six against Adam Milne in the 16th over, while Siddle also hit a four, scoring 11 runs from the over. With 36 out of 24 needed, Couch hit Hardus Viljoen for a six, but the over was only good for three more runs. With a well-hidden cutter, Milne then ended SFU's last-ditch efforts and dismissed Couch. He bowled another off-spinner with the name Ghulam Mudassar on it three deliveries later, securing TSK's victory.
