Aminul Islam urges ICC to freeze BCB funding

A BCB source confirmed on Thursday that Aminul Islam Bulbul has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to freeze funding for the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

It learned that Aminul, the former BCB president, questioned the board's legality in a nearly 14-page letter to the ICC earlier this week. Additionally, he requested that the BCB not receive any financial support from the International Cricket Council (ICC), which is essential to the board's operation and the growth of cricket in the nation.

The source confirmed to this website that "Yes, he (Aminul) requested ICC to freeze their funding for Bangladesh" and that the ICC informed BCB of the letter. The source, who was aware of this development, added that the BCB responded to the ICC after consulting with its legal team.

When asked for clarification regarding the letter and his position, Aminul could not be reached on his phone and did not respond to a text.

In response to the report that was provided by the probe committee, on April 7, the previous board led by Aminul was disbanded by the National Sports Council due to what it deemed to be extensive irregularities in the previous board election.

Former national skipper Tamim Iqbal was appointed head of an 11-member ad-hoc committee on the same day. He was given 90 days to hold the election. On June 7, the election was held, and Tamim won the BCB presidency without a challenger for a four-year term. After dissolving the previous elected body under Aminul in response to a report from a probe committee that revealed their involvement in corruption, the Bangladesh government requested the election in April under the interim body.

The NSC established the committee following Tamim's request for an investigation into the BCB elections of the previous year. Tamim claimed that 50 out of 76 clubs in the capital supported the request for an investigation. The NSC then insisted that they would make a decision regarding the BCB's future based on the investigation committee's report and decided to fire Aminul based on their observations.

On May 30, 2025, Aminul took over for Faruque Ahmed as president of BCB. The National Sports Council (NSC) had fired Faruque as their councillor and then also fired him as president. Following the departure of long-serving BCB president Nazmul Hasan, Faruque assumed office as board president in August 2024.

Following the student movement in July, which saw them overthrow the Awami League government, which had ruled the country for roughly 15 years, Nazmul went into hiding. When the former Yunus-led government approached Aminul, he was working as a development officer at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He returned to Bangladesh with the primary objective of holding an open election. He had originally intended to return to the ICC following the election, but he changed his mind and participated in the election instead, claiming that he wasn't ready to leave without finishing his work.

However, Aminul could not realize his dream after being removed from his post as BCB president on corruption charges. He came under the scanner following widespread allegations against him following the general election in Bangladesh in February earlier this year.
