'I don't think I have anything to prove' - Shubman Gill
When it comes to his place in India's T20I team, Shubman Gill has gone through a series of ups and downs. First, he was dropped before the T20 World Cup 2026, then he returned to the team and was named vice-captain for the Asia Cup. The Gujarat Titans captain, on the other hand, stated that he has nothing to prove in IPL 2026 and that his sole personal objective right now is to lead his team to victory. Additionally, he voiced his disapproval of the Impact Player rule, stating that it "takes the skill out of the game."
"I believe I have scored the most runs in the IPL over the past three or four seasons. In light of this, "I don't think I have anything to prove in particular this season," Gill stated at a press conference prior to the IPL. "In addition, I believe we have performed reasonably well as a team over the four years I have played for this team. Additionally, I believe I have performed decently as a batsman.
Therefore, I don't believe I need to show anyone how valuable I am. I think I need to do what I have been doing for the past four years. And as a team, we need to be consistent, which I think we have been. I also believe that we will once again win that trophy if we keep doing that.
In IPL 2025, Gill scored 650 runs to help Gujarat Titans reach the knockout stages before Mumbai Indians defeated them. It continued Gill's excellent record in the IPL, where he has scored more runs than any other batter since 2020. Gill returned to the T20I squad as vice-captain following that campaign and a successful Test tour of England as captain. He had been out of the format for more than a year. After the Asia Cup, he played in a five-match series in Australia and the first three of a five-match home series against South Africa. However, in 2025, he was dropped from India's T20 World Cup squad after failing to reach fifty in 15 innings.
"Honestly I am not the one to look too much into personal goals. "I like to, whatever team I'm playing for, whether it's for Gujarat or for my country, I like the team I'm playing for and I want them to win," Gill said. "And that is the beginning and the end of my personal goal." Thus, in my opinion, the objective remains unchanged. Inspire as many victories as possible for my team. It goes without saying that when a team participates in the IPL, they do so with the intention of winning the competition.
If you are playing a series, you are looking to beat the other team in the series. I therefore anticipate achieving those objectives. "Obviously, winning the IPL right now is my personal goal. Naturally, we will have additional team tournaments after that, so my personal objectives would shift to those. And that's how I like to look about my goals."
