Ben Stokes to Make England Return After Successful Hamstring Surgery

England Test captain Ben Stokes has declared himself "very, very confident" in resuming his full role as an all-rounder ahead of the upcoming Test matches against Zimbabwe and India this summer. After a five-month recovery from a hamstring tear sustained during the final Test in New Zealand in December 2024, Stokes believes he has handled his rehabilitation "a lot better" this time around . Stokes is set to return in a one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, starting May 22, marking his first match since the injury. He expressed his eagerness to resume his role as the fourth seamer and middle-order batter, aiming to "dominate every situation" on the field. In preparation for his comeback, Stokes has undertaken an extensive rehabilitation program, describing it as "one of the longest rehab periods of his career." He emphasized that this approach has been less taxing both physically and mentally compared to previous recoveries. Looking ahead, Stokes is also expected to lead England in the five-Test series against India, beginning June 20. He has worked closely with head coach Brendon McCullum to manage his workload effectively, ensuring he can contribute fully without risking further injury. Addressing criticisms about England's training methods, particularly during their white-ball tour of India earlier this year, Stokes defended his team's work ethic, stating that such critiques are unfounded and that the players' commitment is "incredible" . With his return, Stokes aims to bring his characteristic intensity and leadership back to the England Test side, reinforcing their competitive edge in the upcoming series. Australia has announced a full-strength 15-player squad for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa, scheduled from June 11 to 15 at Lord's. The squad includes the return of key players such as captain Pat Cummins, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, and all-rounder Cameron Green, who is returning after back surgery. A significant point of discussion is the opening batting partner for Usman Khawaja, following David Warner's retirement. Since Warner's departure, Khawaja has had multiple opening partners. The selectors are considering options including 19-year-old Sam Konstas, who has shown promise but lacks experience in English conditions, and Marnus Labuschagne, who could be promoted from his usual No. 3 position to open the batting. Chairman of selectors George Bailey has indicated that the decision will be finalized closer to the match date.
